Refrigerated freight is worth more, spoils completely instead of partially, and depends on a mechanical unit that can fail, so reefer insurance is really a cargo-coverage problem wearing a truck-insurance costume. Get the liability and physical damage right like any truck, then spend your attention on cargo limit, reefer breakdown, and the fine print that decides whether a spoilage claim actually pays. Most reefer operators run higher than dry-van haulers on premium, commonly $12,000 to $22,000 a year all-in for a single truck in 2026. Here's what matters.
The core stack, then the part that's different
Primary liability and physical damage work the same as any commercial truck: the broker-standard $1,000,000 auto liability and physical damage priced off your truck's value. Primary liability is explained here. Cargo is where reefer earns its own article.
- Cargo limit runs higher. Produce, meat, dairy, and frozen brokers commonly require $250,000, not the $100k dry-van standard, because a full trailer of protein or produce is simply worth more and a temperature failure ruins the whole load. Here's where the $100k standard comes from and when it isn't enough.
- Reefer breakdown is a separate endorsement. Base motor truck cargo does not cover spoilage from mechanical failure of the refrigeration unit. Pull a reefer without a reefer breakdown endorsement and a produce broker will bounce your certificate on sight, and rightly so, because the coverage that matters most on that load isn't on it.
The reefer breakdown trap that guts real claims
Here's the trap inside the trap. Two things routinely cause a reefer breakdown endorsement to pay nothing on a claim that felt covered:
- Driver error is often excluded. A large share of spoilage claims come from a wrong temperature setting or a failure to pre-cool, not a mechanical failure at all. Some cheaper policies include reefer breakdown but exclude driver error, so the exact way most spoilage actually happens is the exact thing they won't pay. Ask specifically whether driver error is covered.
- Maintenance and unit-age conditions. Reefer breakdown endorsements commonly require unit maintenance records and cap the reefer unit age. Skip a service interval and the endorsement can be voided at claim time. Keep the paperwork; it's part of the coverage.
We go deeper on all of this in motor truck cargo: what's actually covered. Read it before you assume your reefer form is clean.

Theft, temperature, and the loads that raise the bar
Reefer freight attracts two extra demands beyond the produce standard:
- High-value food and pharma push limits higher and add theft conditions. Reefer trailers haul some of the most stolen freight on the road. Expect higher cargo limits, and check how your policy treats unattended vehicles, because theft coverage that evaporates in an unsecured lot means where you park at night is an insurance decision.
- Named-peril forms are a bad fit for reefer. A named-peril cargo form covers only listed causes; spoilage, contamination, and wetness claims routinely fall outside the list. For temperature-controlled freight you generally want a broad form plus reefer breakdown with driver error covered.
What does reefer insurance cost in 2026?
For a single reefer with authority, working ranges look roughly like this:
- New authority, one truck: roughly $16,000–$26,000+ the first year. New-venture pricing plus the higher cargo exposure stacks up. Here's why first-year premiums run high.
- Established, 2+ clean years: roughly $12,000–$18,000, with regional radius and a clean loss history pulling toward the bottom.
- Cargo at $250k with reefer breakdown is the line that costs more than a dry-van hauler pays; the liability and physical damage aren't much different from any tractor.
These are working ranges, not quotes. Cargo pricing is driven more by commodity, theft exposure, and your loss runs than by the limit itself, which is exactly why a clean reefer operator can beat these and a claims-heavy one can't.
How McClure helps
Reefer is where the fine print pays the bills, so it's where we earn our keep. When we quote a reefer, we match a broad form with reefer breakdown that includes driver error, set the cargo limit off your real rate confirmations instead of a default, and make sure the certificate says exactly what your produce brokers verify. If you pull temp-controlled freight, start a reefer quote and tell us your commodities and typical load values. Getting set up for the first time? Start with new authority insurance requirements.
