Most of what lowers a commercial truck insurance premium isn't a trick, it's matching the policy to how you actually run and giving underwriters fewer reasons to charge for uncertainty. Some of these you control today, some pay off over the next two years, and a couple are myths worth killing. Here are the 10 that actually move the number. If you want the why behind the price first, start with why truck insurance is so expensive.

The levers you control right now

  • Raise your deductible, on purpose. Moving physical damage from a $1,000 to a $2,500 deductible meaningfully drops the premium. The catch: a broker packet may cap the deductible it accepts, so don't take a $10k deductible that quietly fails a load-board review to save a few dollars.
  • Rate your radius honestly, and tightly. Radius is one of the biggest levers in trucking. A local or regional operation is priced far below a 48-state runner. If your radius shrank, tell your agent, you may be overpaying for exposure you no longer have.
  • Insure the truck for what it's worth. Physical damage is a percentage of stated value. An honestly stated value on an older truck costs less than an inflated one, and a truck you could afford to lose might not need physical damage at all (unless it's financed, where the lender requires it).
  • Right-size your cargo limit. Carrying $250k cargo when your loads run $40k is money spent on exposure you don't have. Work backwards from your real rate confirmations. How to actually set your cargo limit is here.

The levers that pay off over 1 to 2 years

  • Clean MVRs. Driver records are priced hard. Every ticket and preventable accident follows you into the rate. The single most reliable way to lower your premium is time with a clean record.
  • Get past the new-authority penalty. A new authority pays a premium for having no track record. Two years of clean operation reshapes your entire market. Here's why the first year runs so high.
  • Protect your CSA scores. Roadside inspections and violations feed your safety profile, and a rough profile costs you at renewal. Understanding FMCSA safety scores is where to start if yours are creeping up.
  • Keep continuous coverage. Gaps in coverage read as risk. Staying continuously insured, even between trucks, protects your pricing history.

The levers most people miss

  • Shop it independently, across markets. A single carrier gives you a single answer. An independent agent puts your risk in front of many trucking markets at once, and the spread between the high and low quote on the same operation is often thousands of dollars.
  • Pay annually or set up the right financing. How you pay affects the total. A larger down payment or an annual pay can beat a thin-down-payment monthly plan once the finance charges are counted.

Two "levers" that are mostly myths

  • Dropping to state minimums. Filing at $750k instead of $1M saves little and costs you every broker, shipper, and load board that requires $1M. It's a false economy. Here's the real requirement.
  • Chasing the cheapest binder. The cheapest policy often wins on price by excluding the coverage you'll actually need, a named-peril cargo form, an unattended-vehicle theft clause, a commodity exclusion. Cheap that doesn't pay isn't cheap.

How McClure helps

Lowering a premium the right way starts with an honest look at how you run, then shopping it across multiple markets so the number reflects your real risk instead of a default. We rate your radius, size your limits to your actual freight, and find the market that likes your operation. Get a quote and compare, and tell us what you're paying now so we know what to beat.
