Why box trucks are different

A box truck is a real truck to underwriters, even without a CDL

The biggest misunderstanding we hear from new box truck operators is that a non-CDL truck gets a lighter insurance ride. It does not. A 26-foot box truck hauling freight for hire across state lines is a commercial motor carrier, with the same federal liability filing, the same broker requirements, and the same $1,000,000 limit most freight sources expect from a tractor-trailer.

What makes box trucks their own specialty is the work. Class 3 through 7 straight trucks run a mix no other segment does: load board freight one day, an expedite run the next, Amazon Relay blocks, last-mile and final-mile contracts, furniture delivery, and moving jobs with helpers carrying goods into someone's house. A policy written for one can leave you exposed on the others, so the agent quoting you needs to ask what you haul, not just what you drive.

Coverage breakdown

The coverages a box truck needs

A complete box truck program is a stack, not a single policy. Here is what belongs in it and when each piece applies.

Primary auto liability

Pays for injuries and property damage your truck causes to others, and it is the coverage your insurer files with FMCSA to activate your authority. The federal floor for interstate general freight is $750,000, but brokers, shippers, and Amazon Relay almost always want $1,000,000.

Required to operate

Motor truck cargo

Pays for the freight inside the box when it is damaged or stolen in your care. $100,000 is the common broker and Amazon floor. Watch the exclusions for unattended vehicles and theft, and know that the limit covers everything on the truck at once, not each stop.

Required by nearly every load source

General liability

Covers the non-driving side of the business: a scraped wall during a furniture delivery, a customer tripping over your dolly, a claim from a warehouse dock. Amazon Relay requires it at $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, and many last-mile contracts do too.

Required for Relay & most contracts

Physical damage

Covers your own truck for collision, fire, theft, and weather, priced on its stated value. If the truck is financed, the lender will require it and list itself as loss payee.

Protects your equipment

Hired & non-owned auto

Covers liability when your business uses vehicles it does not own: a rental truck while yours is in the shop, or a helper running an errand in their own car. If you have helpers, also ask about workers' comp, which your state may require once you have employees.

The line that trips people up

Non-CDL vs. CDL box trucks

The CDL line and the DOT line are two different numbers. Plenty of operators assume a non-CDL truck skips federal rules. It does not.

Non-CDL box truck

26,000 lbs GVWR or less (most 16 to 26 ft trucks)

  • No CDL required to drive it, which widens your pool of drivers
  • Still needs a USDOT number for interstate work, because the DOT line is 10,001 lbs GVWR
  • Still needs MC authority, a liability filing, and a BOC-3 to haul freight for hire across state lines
  • Underwriters still pull every driver's MVR, CDL or not

CDL box truck

26,001 lbs GVWR and up (heavy straight trucks)

  • Every driver needs a Class B CDL, plus the drug and alcohol testing program that comes with it
  • Bigger payloads and heavier freight, which usually means higher cargo values and physical damage costs
  • Interstate operation adds apportioned plates and IFTA in most cases
  • Rated closer to a tractor, so driver experience matters even more

The rule of thumb: the CDL question is about who can drive the truck. The DOT question is about whether you are a motor carrier. A non-CDL 26-footer running freight across state lines is a motor carrier, and it gets insured like one.

Underwriting, decoded

What drives your box truck insurance price

Two operators with the same 26-foot truck can get quotes thousands of dollars apart. These are the questions underwriters price on.

  • Years in business.

The single biggest lever. A new authority has no history for underwriters to trust, so it pays the most. The swing between a new venture and an operator with 2+ clean years can be 30 to 50 percent on the same truck.

  • What you haul and for whom.

General freight off the load boards prices differently than household goods, electronics, or high-theft loads. Moving work, final-mile delivery into homes, and Amazon contract work each change the cargo and general liability picture. Tell us the real mix.

  • Drivers.

Every driver's MVR gets pulled, whether the truck needs a CDL or not. A recent major violation can double a quote. Young or brand-new drivers raise the rate.

  • Radius & garaging.

A local final-mile route prices well below long-distance expedite, and where the truck is parked at night matters.

Real numbers

What does box truck insurance cost in 2026?

Typical ranges for a single box truck or straight truck, because "it depends" is not an answer. Your quote will land based on the factors above. These are working ranges, not a quote.

Coverage Typical range Notes
Liability + cargo, one truck $4,500 – $9,000 / yr Before physical damage. New ventures sit at the high end; 2+ clean years pull it down.
Motor truck cargo $400 – $1,500 / yr For a $100,000 limit. High-theft or temperature-sensitive loads cost more.
Physical damage 3% – 6% of truck value / yr On the stated value of the truck. A new $80,000 truck costs far more to cover than a paid-off $25,000 one.
General liability A few hundred / yr Required for Amazon Relay and many last-mile contracts.
All-in monthly, one truck $500 – $2,500 / mo Financed premium, depending on the operation, coverage, and equipment value.

Liability is usually 60 to 70 percent of the bill, which is why shopping it across markets matters most. On the down payment, a packaged policy usually takes about 1 to 3 times the monthly payment, while monoline policies bought separately often take more than 3 times. And if a big direct writer like Progressive or GEICO quoted you high with a clean record, credit is often the reason, since they rate heavily on it. We also hold markets that do not use credit at all. The full breakdown is in our 2026 truck insurance cost data and our guide to box truck insurance requirements and cost.

Compliance check

Do you need a DOT number and authority for a box truck?

If you cross state lines, almost certainly. Any truck with a GVWR of 10,001 lbs or more operating in interstate commerce needs a USDOT number, and that covers essentially every 26-foot box truck and most 16-footers. Hauling other people's freight for pay across state lines also takes MC operating authority. Your authority does not activate until your insurer files the BMC-91X liability filing with FMCSA and you have a BOC-3 naming your process agents on file.

Running in Texas? Freight that picks up and delivers inside Texas is intrastate, and for-hire intrastate carriers register with the TxDMV and keep insurance on file there instead of, or in addition to, FMCSA. Texas sets its own liability minimums by weight: $300,000 for trucks at 26,000 lbs or less and $500,000 above that. Most Texas brokers still ask for $1,000,000, and a load that never leaves Texas can still be interstate commerce if the freight came from or is headed out of state. We are based in Dallas and handle both filings. The details are in our Texas truck insurance requirements guide.

Straight answers

Box truck insurance FAQ

How much does box truck insurance cost?

For a single box truck or straight truck in 2026, liability plus cargo typically runs $4,500 to $9,000 a year before physical damage. Physical damage adds about 3 to 6 percent of the truck's stated value per year, and general liability adds a few hundred dollars. Most single-truck operations land somewhere between $500 and $2,500 a month all-in. A brand-new venture pays more than an operator with two or more clean years, and that gap can be 30 to 50 percent on the same truck. These are typical ranges, not a quote.

Does a non-CDL box truck need a DOT number?

Usually, yes, if you haul in interstate commerce. The USDOT line is 10,001 lbs GVWR, not the CDL line. A 26-foot non-CDL box truck is typically rated right around 26,000 lbs, well over 10,001, so it needs a USDOT number for interstate work, and hauling other people's freight for pay across state lines also takes MC operating authority. Not needing a CDL does not mean not needing a DOT number.

What insurance does Amazon Relay require for a box truck?

Amazon Relay asks for $1,000,000 auto liability, $100,000 motor truck cargo, and general liability at $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate. Trailer coverage applies when you pull Amazon trailers power-only, which a box truck does not do. Workers' comp shows as required on their checklist, but whether you need it is driven by your state's law and whether you have W-2 employees. We build the certificate to their spec so it passes the first time.

Do I need general liability for a box truck?

No law requires it for a box truck, but a lot of your customers will. Amazon Relay requires it, and so do many last-mile, final-mile, and delivery contracts. General liability covers non-driving claims, like damaging a customer's floor or doorframe during a delivery, or someone getting hurt at a stop. It does not cover a wreck. That is your auto liability. GL is cheap relative to everything else, usually a few hundred dollars a year.

What liability limit does a box truck need?

The federal minimum for interstate for-hire general freight in a vehicle of 10,001 lbs GVWR or more is $750,000. In practice, most brokers, shippers, and Amazon Relay require $1,000,000, so that is what we quote for most box truck operators. Intrastate-only carriers follow their state's minimum, which can be lower, but a lower limit can keep you from getting loads.

How much is the down payment on box truck insurance?

It depends on how the policy is built. A packaged policy, with liability, cargo, and physical damage written together, usually takes a down payment of about 1 to 3 times the monthly payment. Monoline policies bought separately often take more than 3 times the monthly, because each one has its own minimum premium. Packaging usually means a smaller, more predictable day-one cost.
