Progressive and GEICO advertise hard, so a lot of new truckers call them direct, figuring cutting out the middleman saves money. It usually does the opposite. Here's what buying direct actually gets you, and why an independent agent is the better move for the same money.

Direct means one quote from one appetite

When you go straight to a single carrier, you get that carrier's price, for the operations that carrier likes. That's it. If they're expensive for your state, your radius, your commodity, or your years of experience, you don't find out there's a better market, you just pay their number or start the whole process over somewhere else. And every carrier has an appetite: things they price well and things they price to lose. Direct, you're stuck inside one company's appetite with no way to know if you landed in the good half or the bad half.

An independent agent works the opposite way. We put your one application in front of many carriers and wholesale markets at once, then bring back the ones that actually fit your operation. You see real options with real trade-offs instead of a single take-it-or-leave-it number.

"But the agent costs extra." No.

This is the biggest myth. An agent doesn't cost you more. Insurance is sold with the distribution cost already baked into the rate whether you use an agent or not. Buy direct and the carrier keeps that piece; buy through an agent and it pays the agent, at the same price to you. On top of that, agents can often reach programs and MGAs that don't sell to the public at all, markets a direct buyer can't even see. So you're not paying a premium for the agent. You're getting more shopping for the same money.

The part that matters after you buy

Price is only half of it. The other half is what happens after you sign:

  • At renewal, a direct carrier just sends you a new number. An agent re-shops it, so if your carrier jumped 30%, you're not stuck; we already have the alternatives.
  • At a claim, direct means a call center and a claim number. An agent is a person who knows your account and can advocate for you when it matters.
  • On filings and COIs, an agent handles the BMC-91X, the certificates your brokers need, and the paperwork that trips up new authorities. Direct, that's on you.
  • When your operation changes, add a truck, a driver, a new lane, an agent adjusts the whole picture. Direct, you're navigating a portal.

Let one application shop the whole market

The other risk of buying direct online: buying it wrong

A direct online quote makes you the underwriter. You pick the coverages and limits off a screen, and it is very easy to buy too little, or the wrong thing, and not find out until a claim. New truckers do this constantly: they skip a coverage to hit a lower price, or misunderstand what a line actually protects. A good agent's job is to make sure the policy matches your actual operation, the right limits, the right cargo form, the filings your contracts require, so there's no surprise exclusion waiting behind a claim. If you've ever wondered what a policy really covers, that's the whole point of guides like motor truck cargo: what's actually covered and primary liability, explained like a human.

The honest bottom line

Progressive and GEICO are fine carriers, and an independent agent can often place you with them anyway, alongside a dozen other markets, at the same rate you'd get calling direct. The difference is that direct, you get one company's answer and you're on your own. Through an agent, you get the whole market's answer and someone in your corner. Same money, more coverage, an advocate at renewal and at claim time. That's the trade, and it's not close.

How McClure helps

We're independent, so we're not trying to sell you one company's product, we're trying to find the right one for your operation across all of them. Send us your details once and we'll shop it, explain the options in plain English, and stick with you after you bind. Start your application, and if you just need proof of coverage for a broker, request a COI.
